Running
Guided Discovery Learning
For this section of the lesson it is useful to have the children running in a circle - this is not good for their spatial awareness but does let you observe everyone more easily.
Focus On Arms
Start off getting the children to run and then add the movements below:
Arms straight at sides
Arms straight shoulder level
Arms above head
Arms bent but not moving
Arms bent and swinging at same time as each other
Arms bent and swinging at same time as legs
Arms bend and swinging in opposition to legs
Arms swinging across the body
Arms swinging backwards and forwards
Q: Which is best?
A: Arms bent close to the body swinging backwards and forwards in opposition to legs.
Focus On Legs
Start off getting the children to run and then add the movements below:
Straight legs
Bent legs
High knees
Low knees
Q: Which is best?
A: Bent legs - knee lift will depend on speed of running.
Focus On Feet
Start off getting the children to run and then add the movements below:
Q: Which is best?
A: Heel toe rock
It is important to realise that the task will affect the way that the children run. If they are in a small space then the heel -toe rock and high knees may not feature in their running.
