Repeat taking 1 pt off for every person they bump into.

Skill development – with partner 1 ball between 2

Passing practice

Players face each other passing ball – first pair to 20 passes.

T/Ps

Hands below ball all work in hands and wrists

Try to change direction quickly and confuse the defender

Always watch the attackers body not the ball

Group activity - groups of 6 1 ball

Players must try to pass the ball 6 times without the defender intercepting or touching an attacker. No over head passes

T/Ps

            Move around the grid

Have hands ready to receive a pass

Look for space to move into at all times

Lesson 3

Warm up – ball each

Octopus – all pupils start at on end of the playing area except that catcher who is in the middle. On ‘go’ all pupils must run to the other end trying to avoid being touched by the catcher. When touched pupil must stand still and try to touch other players as they run past.

T/Ps

Only octopus can run freely others must stand where they were caught

Hold ball in two hands when running

Skill development – one ball between 2, cones.

Cones set out 4 of each colour. Pupils work in pairs against the pair beside them at matching colours. Pupils must run to partner with ball and back them pass to partner who does the same but runs to the middle to receive pass. First pair to put ball in middle wins. Winners move up one cone, losers move down.

T/Ps

            Pass to hands

            Stand ready to receive pass

Run with both hands on ball

Group activity -  1 ball per 3rd of hall, 4 cones each 3rd

Working in a group with 1 defender players must try to move the ball from 1 side to the other. When the defender touches the person with the ball, the ball is placed down and the next person in that team runs and picks up the ball. As this is happening the defender must touch the wall behind them before they can touch the next person.

Add on - if you score try then you do not change with defenders.

T/Ps

            Ensure attacking player runs forwards

Defenders can only move towards attacker after touching the wall.

Lesson 4

Warm up

Chain tag – 1 person is the catcher to start, each person that is caught must join hands and link together to form a human chain. If the chain is broken then no one can be caught. The chain must stay together and communicate.

Depending on the class size it may be necessary to split the chain up as it grows.

Group activity

Game of touch rugby

Introducing the basic rules of touch rugby

When a player (attacker) is touched by a defender the ball must be placed on the ground and picked up by a member of the same team. The other team (defenders) must move back in line with the ref before they can continue with the game this is referred to as being ‘on side’.

All players should try to run forwards at all times but must remember to pass backwards!

After the attacking side has been touched a set amount of times it is a change over and the other team gets possession of the ball.

Number of touches before a change over will depend on size of area

The ball must be placed on the ground to score a try it can not be thrown.
