Football
Warm Up
Half of the class need to stand in a space with feet spread apart. Other half have a ball and dribble around area. When given the command the dribblers begin to score points by passing the ball between legs of stationary players. Dribbler can only score on each stationary player once before moving on to next. Emphasise need for head to remain up to watch for other dribblers and to see where to go next. Time for one minute and then switch roles.
Divide class in two with half of the class without a ball and standing in a space. Ask children to dribble around area and on command make eye contact with a stationary player, call their name, pass ball to them, and move to get a return pass. Time for one minute, and then switch roles.
Score
Place the children in two lines. The two children at the front of each line work together to score a goal. The child with the ball dribbles the ball down the side of the area and when they get close to the goals they pass to their team mate who in turn shoots at the goals. The children then go to the opposite line so that on their next turn they do the opposite role. This practice encourages team work as the person shooting needs a good pass to be able to score.
1v1
Get the children into pairs to play 1v1, with each player having a cone as a goal. The object is to hit the cone. Ideally there should be no boundary lines so this is best done outsite in a large area. This practice works on dribbling with a little bit of shooting. They figure out very quickly that they have to beat their man and nothing else will do. After a couple of minutes swap the chilren round so that they are playing someone different - this is a good time to start matching up abilities to get the best out of this practice.
Tags
Children start with a ball and 2 tags (from tag rubgy kit). A player is out when they lose both tags and their ball. A ball is lost when it is kicked out of bounds by another player with a ball, or stolen by a player with at least one flag but no ball. You can only take someone's tag away when you have a ball.
Freeze Nominate a couple of children to be the catchers. All children except the catchers have a ball and dribble in the area. Anyone caught by a catcher becomes frozen and has to stop dribbling, stand with legs apart, and hold the ball above their head. They stay in this frozen position until another player dribbles their ball between the frozen child's legs.
Dodgeball
All children must stay within the area. Choose one catcher to start with a ball. No one else needs a ball at this point but the balls should be at the side. The catcher dribbles and tries to hit the other children with the ball (below the knee only). When hit, that player gets a ball and becomes a catcher too. The game is over when all of the children have been caught. The last player caught starts with the ball for the next game. If you think the task will be too difficult for the starting player then commence with game with two children as catchers.
Surviver
All children stand at opposite end of the area from the balls. There are 1/2/3 or 4 less balls than the children. On your command, the children run to the balls, if they get one they begin dribbling. The player(s) who didn't get a ball try to steal one from the others. After a few minutes stop the game and the player(s) who, at that time do not have a ball, need to do 10 starjumps or another activity based forfeit!
