Basic Moves Example Lesson Plan 1
Lesson Objectives
Reinforce galloping, put the movement under pressure to ensure children can apply galloping in game like situations.
Introduce the correct position for feet during overarm throw.
Equipment
Warm Up - you will need a whistle, music or loud voice!
Development - objects to throw, shuttles are ideal or anything else of similar weight and size.
Stations - 'throwdown feet', chalk or markers. Same objects to throw from development.
Targets - could be spots, hoops, buckets etc.
Application- 2 bibs
Warm Up Activity
Start Stop
Invite the whole class to start travelling and encourage them to move in different directions. Use voice or a whistle or music to signal when the children have to stop. Encourage the children to stop as quickly as possible and to look around them once they have stopped to see how many people they are close to. If they are standing close to someone encourage them to move to a space before starting again.
Copy me
When the children are in their space get them to watch you and copy your actions.
Choose actions like moving your body while on one foot to encourage balancing.
Development Activity
Galloping
Demonstrate galloping to the class and get the children to tell you what you are doing with your feet.
Ask all the children to show you galloping. Watch for children that are managing to gallop. Bring all the children in to sit in front of you and ask if anyone would like to show the class. Pick out the chidren that were capable to demonstrate to the class. Get the rest of the class to talk again about what these children are doing to gallop and give everyone another turn to show you galloping.
During discussions bring out points such as the front foot is always the leader and toes, tummy and nose point in the same direction. (See the criteria section for a full list of points you can talk about). Give children a chance to practice galloping after each quick talk.
Overarm Throw
Demonstrate an overarm throw to the class, and ask them to watch what you do with your feet. (One in front of the other, same leg as throwing hand is at the back).
Ask all the children to stand up and copy you. Have a quick check and when happy, give them out their throwing object and ask them to go and stand 'ready to throw' in a space. When eveyone has their object, allow the class to start throwing.
After they have had a few mintues of throwing bring them in and let them swap throwing object and remind them of where their feet should be when they are throwing. Repeat this several times and ask some children to demonstrate to bring attention to the feet again.
Stations
Galloping
Follow the leader - encourage children to change lead leg.
Overarm Throw
Children should place their feet on one of the 'throwdown feet' and throw towards a target (target must be far away or high to encourage overarm throw).
Application Activity
Galloping Tag
Two children wear bibs - they are the catchers. Play any of the tag games but instead of running all children must gallop.
End lesson by talking about the points you were trying to get across during the development section.
