Gymnastics Forward Roll

How to Forward Roll

Children start in a tucked position, knees bent but shoulders up with hands reaching in front. Next step is to put hands flat on mat and lift hips. Keeping head to chest and knees bent. As hips lift the roll begins and the back of your head or the top part of the shoulders are the only parts that should touch the mat.

Children can end in the same position they start.

For children that can perform a forwards roll then they should aim to finish in a standing position preferably without using hands to push up from the mat.

Teaching Points
Squat down

Chin on your chest

Raise your hips

Common issues

Not staying in a tucked ball postition
Putting or driving their head into the mat
Rolling off to the side

To resolved these issues
Make the movement easier by creating a slope with benches or a springboard put mats on top and let the children roll down - this means the hips start higher then the hands which makes the roll easier.

Have the children start with feet on a bench and roll onto a safety mat  - again hips start higher than hands.

How to help with Spotting:
Place your hand on the back of the head to cushion the roll.
Help by guiding their hips as they are rolling.
