Gymnastics Backwards Roll

For a practice exercise to start the lesson or as a station have children on a mat crouched in a tuck position (children can also start sitting to make it easier if required), with hands close to ears held so palms are towards the ceiling and thumbs towards their ears. Get them to rock backwards staying in a tuck position until their hands touch the mat. like

When they can do the above with no problems, then they may squat down as in a forward roll.
Remind them where to put their hands

Stay in a tuck position and begin to roll backwards.

When the weight is on your shoulders and you are starting to go over you must push hard with your hands. Put the feet down first and continue to push the head and upper body off of the mat.

Teaching Points

Squat down

chin on your chest

roll with hands in starting position.
Push hard with the hands.

Common Issues:
You may not be rolling fast enough.
Hands not pushing you away from the mat.
Rolling off to one side.
Landing on the knees rather than the feet.

How to overcome these issues
Create a slope using benches and wall bars with mats on top or use a spring board or wedge mat. Creating a slope means the hips start higher than the hands which makes the roll easier.

Some children simply do not like to roll backwards and patients will be required.

What to do if Spotting:
Place your hand on the back of the head to cushion the roll.
Help by lifting their hips as they are rolling.
