This section gives lesson ideas for teaching basketball to upper primary classes using the sports Sports Education teaching method. This is relevant to the new CfE as it encourages children to be responsible for their learning.
 

Lesson 1

 

warm up

King of the ring. In pairs one partner sitting at the side waiting to swap in. Partner with ball must bounce the ball continuously in the badminton court area. If the player looses control or ball is bounced with two hands or taken out of the area the player takes one shot at the hoop then swaps with partner. Defender(s) are in the court to try and hit balls out of the area

1 set shot from free throw line

2 passing

3 mini king of the ring

4 shooting from dribble (set shot)

5 1v1

6 passing possession game

7 dribble practice

 

Group activity

 

Voting for team captains and coaches and team selection.

Sheets for wall explaining each station.

Team sheets for captains to fill out for next week.

 

 

Lesson 2

 

Warm up

 

In pairs follow leader. Front person with ball dribbling.

Copy leader. Teacher lead skills then working in pairs.

Skill development

In pairs. Peer assessment set shot. Each pupil performs the set shot and their partner has to fill out a checklist detailing which t/p are being performed right or wrong.

Can also be done with checklist on the wall and partner providing verbal feedback on the performance.

Not everyone can aim at basket so targets on wall and keep moving round. Time keeper.

 

Game of buzz using set shot

Group activity

3v3 possession game. Team captains to choose how the team is split into 3’s.

point for every 5 successive passes. Player change on whistle. If enough baskeys players can shot to score points. Double points for set shots

Lesson 3

 

Warm up

Discussion of the role of a warm up

 

In pairs follow leader. Front person with ball dribbling.

Copy leader. Teacher lead skills then working in pairs, demonstrating skills to partner then partner tries to copy.

Skill development

In teams

 

Figure of 8

Working in groups of 3. two people pass the ball back and forth. The other player must wait on the shoulder of one of the pair then step in and intercept the ball

 

Straight across

Same as before but the player intercepting simply times their run and runs across the pass.

 

Group activity

 

Games with man-to-man marking. 5v5.

Marking like to like. Captain is responsible for rolling subs in the game. Time keeper to help.

  

Coaches to bring warm up for nest week warm up should be without a ball and last about 5mins

Choose a reporter and photographer from class


Lesson 4

 

Warm up

Coaches to deliver warm up for 5 mins.

 

Skill development

Shooting

Teams start in the corners of the hall they must go round individually and take a shot at each basket. First team to score 10 wins must keep score out loud if I don’t hear it, it doesn’t count.

5v5 games man to man marking.

Lesson 5

 

Warm up 

Basketball between 2

 

King of the ring from week 1

 

 Or advanced

 

1 partner at side other in badminton court dribbling continuously. Players must dribble the basketball but also watch out for the beanbag being passed around, they must catch it if it is thrown to the, if they miss they swap with partner. Before throwing the beanbag name of the person it is being thrown to must be called.

Skill development

Lay up practice as with set shot in lesson 2

Not everyone can aim for basket so pick a target on the wall and move round, timekeeper.

Group activity

Start of tournement to be played out over following weeks until every team has played each other.
