Basic Moves Example Lesson Plan 2

Learning Objectives
Discover best position for arms when running
Introduce power and accuracy in the underarm slide.

Warm Up Activity

Ask all the children to find a space - using their eyes to look to make sure nothing is near them, try to discourage swinging arms around to check space.

When they are all standing explain that they are now in their own bubble and everywhere they can reach (keeping one foot still) is their space. Work with the children to explore the space around them, showing them reaching high, low, sides, front and back.

Ask the children to walk around the room going into other people's bubbles and ask them to greet each other by making a shape.

Now ask the children to jog around the area going into lots of bubbles but without touching anyone. Depending on age of class - tell them they get 1 point for every bubble they go into but lose 1 point for every person they touch.

Development Activity

Running

Guided Discovery Learning
For this section of the lesson it is useful to have the children running in a circle - this is not good for their spatial awareness but does let you observe everyone more easily.

Focus On Arms
  • have the children run
  • arms straight at sides
  • arms straight shoulder level
  • arms above head
  • arms bend but not moving
  • arms bent and swinging at same time as each other
  • arms bent and swinging at same time as legs
  • arms bend and swinging in opposition to legs
  • arms swinging across the body
  • arms swinging backwards and forwards

Q: Which is best?
A: Arms bent close to the body swinging backwards and forwards in opposition to legs.

Sliding

Ask the children to slide the beanbag as far as they can. Find a child who is swinging their arm to slide the beanbag far away. Ask if this child will show the class. Get the class to sit and watch and ask if anyone can see why the beanbag is going so far? Bring attention to the arm swing. Demonstate holding onto the beanbag too long so that the beanbag will go through the air and not along the floor. Ask the children if they know what you are doing wrong. Get the children to show you their sliding with a swinging arm so that the beanbag goes far away.

Stations

Running - Shuttle Runs. Put the children into groups of 2 and get them to take turns both running and watching. The child that is not running has to try and watch to see if their partner is swinging their arms. Give the children signs to hold up or ask them to do 'thumbs up' for a good swing by their partner. Make sure children change over so both have a turn to watch.

Sliding - Children work with a partner and have to try and hit a small cone positioned in the middle between their partner and themselves.

Additional stations should only include movements that have been previously developed.

Overarm Throw - Working with a partner get the children to throw to their partner. Allow children to access different throwing items and they can swap after a couple of throws.

Travelling - Equipment set out to allow children to travel in different ways using different equipment.

  • Hoop and hurdles for jumps.
  • Small cones for running etc
  • Benches for jumping, walking, sliding etc.
Additional equipment could include wallbars, box top, spring board etc.

Application  Activity

Whole class is split into two teams. Each team stands in one half of the gym hall, using a line of small cones to split the area in half. Beanbags (at least one per child) are placed in each half. The aim of the game is to slide a beanbag and hit a cone in to the other team's half. All children work at the same time until time is up (approx. 2mins). The winning team is the team with the least cones in their half.
